O mio babbino caro (‘Oh My Beloved Father’) is a soprano aria that comes in the middle of Puccini’s opera Gianni Schicchi where Schicchi’s daughter, Lauretta sings after tensions rise between her father and the family of Rinuccio, the boy that she loves. The aria provides a breath of fresh air after the atmosphere has become tense with jealousy. While I’ve never actually sung the role of Lauretta in Puccini’s opera Gianni Schicchi, but I have found singing the aria has always been a great favorite with concert audiences. It was the composer’s only comic opera and although the music may sound sad, it is actually Lauretta trying to get around her father to let her marry Rinuccio.
